5 Common Causes Of Abdominal Pain

Whether it's a mild stomach ache, sharp pain, or stomach cramps, abdominal pain can have numerous causes. Some of the more common causes are:

1) Indigestion

When a person is experiencing indigestion, they will feel various kind of discomforts which includes bloating of stomach, belching belching and gas, nausea and vomiting, an acidic taste in your mouth and many more. It is easy to get indigestion but prevention is always better than cure. Eat in small portion and slowly. Avoid foods with a lot of acid and it is best to wait for 3 hours after your last meal before going to bed.

​2) Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Studies have suggests that Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS are common with women. Some of the symptoms include diarrhea, constipation and abdominal cramps. The best prevention include diet and lifestyle changes and medications.

3) Gas

For every food you eat, your body will release gas through your mouth (burping) or through your anus (flatulence). Naturally, people gas about 20 times a day. Gas are made in two ways: when you swallow air and when the bacteria in your large intestine help digest your food. Undigested food moves from the small intestine to the large intestine. Once it gets there, the bacteria go to work, making hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane, which then leave your body. Foods that contain carbs includes beans, vegetables, fruits, dairy products, whole-grain foods and soft drinks are known to cause excessive gassing. If any time you feel bloated or pain, it is time to visit the doctor.

4) Stomach Virus

Stomach virus or gastroenteritis also commonly known as "stomach flu" are one of the common cause for abdominal pain. Patients diagnosed with stomach virus will have diarrhea and vomiting. This is because the stomach and intestines are irritated and inflamed. Stomach virus are also commonly seen in children. There are many ways gastroenteritis can be spread such as in contact with someone who has the virus, contamination of food or water and poor hygiene.

5) Appendicitis

Appendicitis in an inflammation of the appendix, a 3 1/2-inch long tube of tissue that extends from the large intestine. Appendicitis is the only disease that requires prompt surgery to remove the appendix. There is no way to prevent appendicitis. However, appendicitis is less common in people who eat foods high in fiber, such as fresh fruits and vegetables

How is Abdominal Pain treated?
The treatment varies from different causes. Treatments can range from medications for inflammation, GERD or ulcers to antibiotics for infections. Severe cases such as asappendicitis and a hernia, a surgery is necessary.
